Leroy Austin

Entered on 2008-12-08 by Luigi Falconi

Leroy McKinley Austin Jr. 1941-2008

The Duke and his friends recently lost one of the old Dubai gang. Leroy Austin was laid to rest in a beautiful ceremony with a 21 gun salute at Arlington National Cemetery on December 1st. Leroy’s son Linh, and daughter, Wanda, did their dad proud. Linn gave a beautiful eulogy and Wanda read a touching poem she wrote for her dad. A bus load of Leroy’s high school classmates came from West Virginia to pay their respects. How many of us have that kind of lasting friendships?

Leroy was a special man. He was a pillar of the Dubai community, coaching basketball at the American School, organizing softball leagues, participating in Halloween Carnivals and every other event that was held. He even organized the first full-pad football league at the school. Every kid who passed through the school after 1975 had Leroy as some type of coach, and all loved him.

In the 1970’s and 80’s everyone in Dubai knew Leroy personally or knew who he was. His house was always full of visitors who feasted on his award winning chili and great Asian food. Since the first Gulf War you would find his home filled with sailors and marines, not just the young enlisted men and women but the top brass also. His poker nights were memorable. Where else could you have such camaraderie, eat great food, drink lots of booze, and win Leroy’s money. Actually he was a pretty good player. We’ll miss you ole buddy.

I met Leroy in '85 and watched him organize the building of the present softball field complex next to the Metropolitan Hotel. It would not have been done without him.

Sorry to hear about Leroy's passing. I worked with him in Wichita Kansas in 1975-1976 for Dynalectron Corp. who he as with for many years in Vietnam. The last time I communicated with him was in 2004 and he was in Singapore. He sure was a fun person to work and play with.
